Objective: I am a Senior in Food Science. I want to go to graduate school for Microbiology. I have a passion for how food interacts with and affects the gut microbiome. In my career, I hope to be involved in research that will benefit people with chronic illnesses.
Desired Field: I am interested in Food Science as well as Gut Microbiology. I have always been fascinated with how food fuels us and our gut microbiome. Achieving a food science bachelor’s and a microbiology master’s will set me up for research that will benefit the average person, as well as research geared towards how best to fuel your body while living with a chronic illness.
Projects: When I first started working there last year, it was a lot of stray drying products for companies. This involved taking samples every 30 minutes to collect the product as well as test it for moisture content. I have also done projects with the extruder. I have built the screws and have closely worked with Drew and Joe to collect product and assemble/disassemble the machinery. Recently, the Pilot Plant has started to trial test sodas (to do a taste test during plant tours). We started the rough recipe (from scratch), and from there we have adjusted the sweetness, added flavors, and played with the sourness and carbonation aspects. I have also made ‘block I’ cookies for games and school events, which is always a fun time.
Equipment Capabilities: Spray Dryer, Extruder, Retort, ‘block I’ cookie making, steam hoses, and cleaning caravans. I have an understanding of the kitchen equipment as well.
Relevant Skills: Chemical safety and Plant safety as well as teamwork, proper cleaning procedures, and an understanding of the machinery.
